portable diaper caddy.

We were at our friends' house the other day, meeting their new baby girl, and they showed us this portable diaper caddy that they had. They said they keep one on each level of their two-story house and that it comes in very handy because all the supplies are right at hand when you need them. We have the changing station upstairs in the nursery, but I thought it would be nice to have one of these caddies downstairs for quick diaper changes. So here's an easy do-it-yourself project for all you mommies (or daddies) out there. Take an old basket like this one...

...and give it a fresh coat of spray paint and make a liner for it (I used a soft blue toile fabric). And voila!

nursery teaser.

I know I've been promising nursery pics to everyone. I will get them posted soon. I'm just waiting on Winn to finish making the curved curtain rods, but he's been very tied up lately with a big project at work, fixing our well, church involvement, etc. I think things will slow down this week, so hopefully I will have something for you soon. In the meantime, I'll give you a little peek at some of the items in the room.

This is my $2.50 thrift store bargain. Kinda nasty, huh?

Nothing a little fabric and cording can't help...

Well, hello, lovely footrest for the rocking chair! Where have you been all my life?

And who doesn't love the half-price sales at Hobby Lobby?
(Unfinished birdhouse: $2.00. Small carved embellishments: $1.50.)

Brush on a little paint, add a bird, and here's what you get...

I thought Mr. Turtle would make a cute footstool after a makeover, and he was only $1.99 at the thrift store...

And these shelves have been in a box, not being used, since our move...

There, that's much better, don't you think?
(Also shown: a little old chair I found in our barn, and a "Happy" sign that I already had that was in need of a paint job.)

And a few of the things I have made are this little stuffed elephant...

A lap quilt for late-night nursing in the rocking chair...

And a knitted crib blanket and blue ruffled slip cover for a throw pillow...

Full nursery tour coming soon!

random bits of our life right now.

* I think I may have overdone it. I don't know why I decided to rearrange the living room and my sewing area all in one night, the same night that I finished a big two-day job and needed to have all four transcripts turned in, the same night I had to clean, get laundry done, and get ready for weekend guests, and the same night that Winn was away at a meeting. I was on a roll and couldn't bring myself to stop the nonsense and crawl into bed until around 1:30 in the morning. The next day (yesterday) I had a lot of contractions, and today I am really sore. I think I should maybe slow down.

* This morning I made quiche, pumpkin muffins with cream-cheese filling, and fruit smoothies. We chatted around the breakfast table for an hour and a half with good friends. That is my favorite way to spend a Saturday morning.

* My sister Polly is a music major, and tonight we went to her senior recital. She did an excellent job, and she even made this non-crier cry. A couple weeks ago we went shopping to find just the right dress for her to wear. We ended up with a fabulous black number with a cinched waist and slouch pockets and paired it with an oversized pearl necklace with a big flower attached to it. Some black leggings and ballet flats completed the look. She looked radiant.

* Our well quit working last weekend. We were without running water for four days while Winn dug up the pump, replaced all the old pipe and the old pump, tested the electrical and the capacitor and the relay switch and anything else he could think of, only to find out that it was a simple matter of cleaning off the corroded ends of a switch that wasn't working properly. On the bright side, at least he knows the inner workings of our well for future reference.

* I can't believe we'll be bringing home a baby within just a few short weeks...yikes! It doesn't seem possible. Here are a few samples of my maternity pics from a few weeks ago, taken by Krista at The Moments of Life...

one year.

I was still lying awake at 1:00 this morning, thinking about how this day began one year ago. One year. It doesn’t seem possible. And yet, in some ways, it seems like more time has passed. Because one year is a long time to live without this sweet lady when you have had the pleasure of having her in your life for twelve years.

Shortly after 1:00 a.m. we got a call from Winn’s dad asking how far down the road we were, saying we should hurry, that she was in a lot of pain. And I will never forget the words Winn said next, the gift he gave to his mom that night. “Tell her she can go. She doesn’t have to wait for us.” And I remember how helpless we felt, knowing we were still too far away, already speeding through the night, held captive by distance. We had come back home for a couple days, to check on things and get a few changes of clothes. But 300 miles is a great chasm when death sneaks up on you, sooner than you were ready for it. The next phone call from Winn’s brother, dreaded but expected, came just an hour and a half later. Sherill had breathed her last.

In another 60 miles or so we arrived there, and although she was still warm when I touched her face, her beautiful soul was with her Creator, finally free from the ugly cancer. And that thought got us through the days ahead. And still gets us through.

I love and miss you, Sherill. I can’t wait to see you again "in the sweet by and by, when we meet on that beautiful shore.”

baby mobile.

I should get the World's Worst Blogger Award for my complete lack of attention to posting lately. We've been working on the nursery, so I'll be posting photos of that soon. But for now I'll just show you the mobile I made for above the crib. I've been wanting to make this felt garland ever since I saw it on Anna Maria's blog about a year ago, so when I was trying to decide on a mobile to make, this idea came to mind...

And I love how it turned out!

blue or pink?

Found these cute little koala jammies on sale to bring Baby home in. I knew I wanted something soft and cozy instead of "real" outfits. Can't wait to find out which one we'll get to use!
