it's been a beautiful weekend, and we just can't seem to spend enough time outdoors! this afternoon i did some weeding in my bed of hostas and then washed off the deck furniture. winn has done a lot of yard work this weekend as well. he's in the process of digging a trench to put in a new retaining wall using some of the limestone from our hill. this afternoon he decided to take a well-deserved break and go golfing with a friend. yesterday we spent the afternoon at quarry hill park with a group of other young couples. we went walking on the trails, played some bocce ball, and then had a picnic.
yesterday morning i went to yet another baby shower. this one was for my friend rebecca who is due in just a couple more weeks. i made her a teddy bear and a blanket, and they turned out really cute!

word has it that our neighbors across the street, gordy and linda, are getting a hottub put on their second-story deck behind their house. i woke up this morning to our doorbell. it was a crane operator asking me to move my car because they were going to be using the whole street to lift this hottub off the truck and onto the deck. it was pretty exciting to watch. i took a couple pics for you. the next house down, scott and natalie, already have a hottub on their third-story deck. that must be the thing to do on teton court. winn and i better get with the program! :)

he left his work gloves and pliers on the kitchen counter, his belt on my desk, his necktie on the chair, schoolbooks on the table, wallet on the end table... does your husband do this too? some days it seems i just walk from room to room picking up things that winn left sitting there, and when i get to the last room, it's time to start all over again! i don't think he's intentionally trying to mess up the place or trying to be frustrating, so i'm not complaining, just marveling at the fact that they must really sincerely not think about these things. i guess i sort of find it endearing (don't tell him or he'll never quit doing it!), but only because he'll willingly pick it all up if i ask him to. but i do have to ask him, because it's just not something that's even on his radar screen. he'd rather wrestle with sajak or relax on the couch with me. i love that about him.

last night winn and i made gifts for our secretaries, and then we delivered them today. we went and got some pretty boxes at world market and spent the evening dipping strawberries in milk chocolate, white chocolate, almonds, all kinds of good stuff. don't forget about your secretaries today! what would we do without them?!

winn and i saw the movie "blood diamond" with some friends last night. it's set in the sierra leone civil war in '99, and it's really hard to watch because of all the atrocities that take place due to the struggle between the rebel groups and the government. but i think it's good for people to see and be aware of. i've always been interested in visiting orphanages in africa and even adopting children from its war-torn countries some day, and researching all the things that are still happening to children in sierra leone, angola, and other countries just makes my desire stronger. how can humans amputate the limbs of children and make them kill their own parents? i question if they are human at all.

last night we celebrated my friend ellie's birthday at sontes, a new tapas-style restaurant in downtown rochester that has a sort of urban uptown feel to it. they have a wonderful french mediterranean menu with a spanish flair, including fresh cheeses from normandy and the netherlands, an unending wine list, and desserts like cleopatra's utopia, lemon budino, and chocolate lasagna. if you live in rochester and haven't tried it yet, i would highly recommend it!

the countertop that winn and his brother made for our bathroom turned out awesome! the design they came up with is really neat. we removed it from the mold a couple nights ago. there was only one problem, we accidentally busted it when trying to pull it free from the mold. oh well. at least we know how it's done now. it would still need some grinding, polishing, and sealing work done on it, so these pictures wouldn't be how the finished product would look; but at least you get the idea. winn is going to make another one, maybe trying some new colors, etc. it was neat to see how the whole process works. maybe we can try the kitchen countertops next...

i surprised winn with tickets to a golf resort in phoenix for this weekend. we've been really busy lately (especially winn) with work, school, foster care training, and church stuff, so i thought it would be fun to get away for a long weekend. ric and melissa, our worship pastor and his wife, are coming too, so we're looking forward to spending time with them and basking in the sunshine! i just had to take these pictures of winn this evening when i found him downstairs cleaning out his golf bag and getting ready to go. you should see him--he looks like an excited little boy on christmas morning. he says that the three golf balls he's holding in his hands are all that he'll be needing for the whole trip. :)

winn's brother and his family were here over the weekend. tye, emily, and remy got to go iceskating for their first time. we had a pizza/movie party one evening and a wrestling match the next. they brought their new golden retriever puppy samson along, and he and sajak had a blast together. i think sajak's 100-pound frame was a little overwhelming for samson at first, but by the end of the weekend they were best buds, traipsing around the yard and wrestling with each other.
we've been debating about whether to put granite or concrete countertops in our kitchen. winn thought that he and his brother tim could try building some molds and make the countertops themselves, so this weekend they built a trial one for our bathroom before they venture a large project like the kitchen. i'm posting a few pics of the whole process, and i'll try and post more of the finished product once it's dry and removed from the mold and installed in the bathroom. if you'd like to see what concrete countertops are like, check out the photo gallery on this website: www.mojoconcrete.com.
